Black Myth: Wukong – Action RPG Distinction Unveiled

Distinct Action RPG Vision

Black Myth: Wukong carves its own distinct path in the action RPG landscape.

While it shares surface mechanics with certain challenging titles—like stamina management and checkpoint resting—its soul feels different.

The experience leans more towards the narrative-driven, skill-tree progression of modern epics than towards a traditional bleak pilgrimage.

From a brief but impactful demo, the combat is fluid and deeply satisfying, the visual spectacle is breathtaking, and the world feels compellingly crafted.

It confidently stands as a premier action RPG, a testament to its unique vision rather than a homage to a single genre.

As summer heats up, we're exploring the most anticipated games revealed at Summer Game Fest.

The demo opens with a monkey protagonist known as the Destined One, Wukong, inspired by the legendary Sun Wukong from Journey to the West.

Set against the backdrop of Black Wind Mountain, he battles fierce canine warriors resembling kobolds amidst a sunlit forest.

Two standout features of Black Myth: Wukong quickly become apparent:

First, its rich fantasy world, a theme rarely explored in video games.

Second, the stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5, which bring the environment to life with incredible detail while maintaining smooth performance.

This was experienced on what appeared to be a high-end gaming PC.

The world of Black Myth: Wukong dazzles with intricate detail, though this abundance can sometimes obscure the path forward, leading to unexpected barriers.

'

Its magic system is a true standout, weaving the surreal fabric of Chinese mythology into every action, where transformation is as mundane as conversation.

'

Combat reveals a deceptive depth, centered on a simple staff that unlocks a sophisticated array of tactical possibilities and styles.

'

While the demo offered a more focused, boss-centric experience, the promise of a broader world with secrets and side quests awaits in the full journey.

'

The setting feels uniquely lived-in, a place where the extraordinary is ordinary, presented without fanfare to captivating effect.

From the very first swing, Black Myth: Wukong’s combat feels fluid and powerful.

The light attack string is rapid and visceral, with every impact delivering a satisfying crunch.

Mastering the evasion is key, as the system favors a dodge timed to the moment of impact rather than a pre-emptive one.

It’s an initially jarring rhythm that soon becomes second nature.

Forget traditional heavy attacks.

The real power lies in charged strikes, which you must deliberately wind up.

A fully charged blow can devastate common foes, making it perfect for initiating combat.

Tapping the button without charging is a trap—a slow, weak move you should avoid.

Skill points, earned from experience and kept on death, unlock crucial enhancements early on.

One essential upgrade lets you charge your attack while sprinting, adding tremendous momentum to your assaults.

Other priorities include improving dodge speed, reducing stamina costs, and ensuring your combos aren’t broken by evasion.

The ability to freely respec your skill tree encourages constant experimentation with this deep and rewarding system.

The boss encounters consistently challenged my approach and forced me to adapt my playstyle.

'

Each adversary, from colossal beasts to agile sorcerers, possessed a unique and demanding cadence.

'

Humanoid foes unleashed extended weapon combos, requiring precise and repeated evasion.

'

In contrast, towering behemoths wielded earth-shattering strength, their area-of-effect assaults making positioning a critical survival tactic.

'

This variety ensured every victory felt earned through mastery of a distinct combat puzzle.

The animations in the game are exceptionally well-crafted, each enemy telegraphing their moves clearly.

Even during my initial playthrough, I managed to defeat several bosses on the first try, though some encounters demanded multiple attempts, highlighting the game's challenging nature.

I quickly learned to anticipate enemy movements and time my dodges effectively.

Notably, the game avoids the frustratingly delayed and deceptive dodge animations common in many modern action RPGs, which was a relief.

Wukong, the protagonist, feels remarkably nimble and responsive.

From the lock-on system to the fluid dodge mechanics and realistic enemy stagger effects, the combat experience feels polished and satisfying.

If this were classified as a Soulslike, it might stand out as the finest since titles like Lies of P, which I consider the best in the genre.

And this impression comes from just a demo—progression systems and deeper mechanics have yet to be explored.

Game Mechanics Overview

The combat in Black Myth: Wukong offers a deep and flexible progression system.

While the spell tree remained locked, I explored upgrades across general passives and distinct staff techniques.

Investing in a fighting style extends your basic light attack and unlocks a powerful heavy combo breaker, fueled by energy earned through aggression and precise evasion.

This energy also allows for instant charged attacks, creating constant tactical decisions on resource expenditure.

Unlocking a second energy slot opened higher-tier abilities, including a devastating follow-up to the combo breaker.

An upgrade granting brief hyper-armor made this move a reliable boss-fight finisher, solidifying my rhythm: open with charges, weave light strings, and cash out energy for big interrupts.

Healing on energy attacks provided a welcome sustain layer.

The game truly expands with two additional, swappable fighting styles.

One transforms charged attacks into a unique pillar stance, where Wukong perches atop his staff, evading ground assaults while it accumulates energy for a massive downward slam.

Further customization comes from equippable gear, with armor sets providing stat boosts and unique perks.

Finding a circlet that allowed healing while sprinting, for instance, proved invaluable during intense encounters.

What truly captivated me early on was the introduction of the magic system.

Shortly after starting the game—or at least the demo—I acquired my first spell: immobilize.

This spell halts enemies, bosses included, freezing them solid for a brief window.

It’s as powerful as it sounds—freeze foes, slip behind them while they’re stuck, and land uninterrupted hits.

Usually, one immobilize is enough to obliterate standard enemies or unleash a full combo on bosses.

It almost feels like cheating, and the best part is you can use it frequently.

Although immobilize has a lengthy cooldown of about 50 seconds and a short effect duration, plus some limitations (like not being able to freeze bosses mid-attack combos), it essentially lets you stop time.

And this is your very first spell, costing minimal mana to cast!

The game offers four spell slots, with multiple spells eventually vying for each slot.

While I can’t imagine ever giving up immobilize, I’m more open to experimenting with transformation spells.

For example, after defeating an early boss—a fire glaive-wielding wolf man named Guangzhi—I unlocked a transformation spell with a long cooldown.

Activating it lets me take on his form for a limited period, effectively granting a second health bar.

When transformed, you have a separate HP pool, and if you 'die' in this form, you revert back to your monkey self instead of facing a full game over.

As Guangzhi, your attacks differ; you can unleash rapid combos that are weaker than your staff strikes but inflict strong burn damage, adding a strategic layer to combat.

Transformation spells offer impressive versatility, allowing you to absorb damage without penalty while still delivering significant attacks. For example, in certain boss fights, I’d start by immobilizing the enemy, then quickly transform and ignite them while they were frozen. Often, the immobilize ability would be ready again by the time my transformation ended.

Compared to the Destined form, Guangzhi’s transformation felt somewhat cumbersome, especially when dodging, yet it remained a potent skill. I’m eager to discover more transformation options and determine which form best suits different battles.

Choosing your loadout also involves customizing your healing gourd, such as adding bonuses that cure poison or provide additional healing.

Black Myth: Wukong represents a new wave of ambitious action RPGs emerging from China, a region traditionally known for mobile gaming but now making significant strides on PC and consoles. It currently holds the top spot on Steam’s wishlist charts and has generated a great deal of excitement this year.

After spending two hours with the demo, it’s clear why the hype exists—this game delivers an experience that feels genuinely engaging, and potentially outstanding. While much remains uncertain about the full release, this initial glimpse was a standout highlight at SGF.

The game is set to launch on PS5 and PC on August 20, with an Xbox Series X|S version planned for later due to optimization challenges.
