Pompey have been given the go ahead to build a new 35 acre training ground at Lee-on-the Solent in Hampshire.Gosport Council voted unanimously for the new state-of-the-art multi-million pound complex late Tuesday evening. The scheme will reap many benefits for the town and community.The proposed site, located in Cherque Way will house ten full size pitches, two mini pitches and a three quarter size pitch. The new site will be at least ten times the size of Pompeys current training location in Eastleigh. It will provide fantastic facilities for the first team and the Youth Academy, something which has not happened before.Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Portsmouth Hassan Whiteside Jersey manager Redknapp said that it was an important milestone for the club, something that needed to be done to attract the top players.You need a training facility. You need a stadium. The team on the pitch is fantastic, and now were getting the important stuff behind the scenes like the stadium and the training ground.Its going to be fantastic. It looks superb. Gosport Council have been a big help and obviously Peter Storrie and the staff.We can start producing some players through the Academy and having good facilities is going to be so important to us.Portsmouth have beentraining at theWellingtonGround in Eastleigh for the past six years, nearer tofierce rivals Southampton than the city of Portsmouth itself.Although the situation and location were not ideal, Redknapp was quick to praise the grounds andgive his thanks forwhat they had achieved there.We had six fantastic years there. The facilities have improved, but theyre not up to standard and it doesnt belong to us.Its been difficult but weve made the best of it and it will be great to have our own training facility.Pompeys original location wasa 55 acre site in Titchfield. However Fareham Borough Council turned down the idea much to the disgust of many Pompeyfans at the time.Although the new site may be 20 acres smaller, I think manyPompey fans willbe happy to see the training ground having a POpostcode.Work on the new complexis expected to start late summerin the hope it will be completed in time by the start of next years pre-season.With Gaydamark,Storrie and other keymembers of the club, it looks like we are finally moving in the right direction off the pitch, as well as on.
