Advanced Coal Gasification Systems represent a fundamental shift from traditional coal combustion, offering a pathway to cleaner energy production and the creation of valuable chemical products. Gasification is the process of converting coal into a gaseous mixture, known as synthesis gas or syngas (a blend of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and other gases), by reacting it under high pressure and temperature with a controlled amount of oxygen and/or steam.

The main technological embodiment of this is the Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC). In an IGCC plant:

  1. Gasification: Coal is gasified to produce syngas.
  2. Gas Cleanup: Pollutants like sulfur and particulates are removed from the syngas before it is burned. This pre-combustion cleanup is highly efficient because the pollutants are in a much more concentrated, pressurized stream than in a conventional flue gas.
  3. Power Generation: The cleaned syngas is burned in a high-efficiency gas turbine, and the hot exhaust from the gas turbine is used to generate steam, which drives a steam turbine. This combined cycle results in very high thermal efficiency.

The primary benefits of Advanced Coal Gasification Systems include superior environmental performance and fuel flexibility. They inherently produce lower emissions of SO2, NO, and mercury compared to conventional pulverized coal (PC) plants, and critically, they are designed to easily integrate CO capture (pre-combustion capture), making them cleaner by design. Furthermore, the syngas produced can be used not only for power generation but also as a feedstock for producing chemicals, fertilizers, and even liquid fuels, offering a multi-product revenue stream.

However, the systems are complex, require high capital investment, and are operationally challenging, leading to limited global deployment. Despite its technological superiority, the high cost of IGCC has meant that the market has often favored the slightly less efficient but more commercially proven Ultra-Supercritical PC technology. The future role of advanced gasification is increasingly viewed through the lens of a hydrogen economy, where the process is used to generate low-carbon hydrogen from coal in a process that is coupled with CO2 capture and storage.
