What Are the Key Differences Between Standard and Heavy-Duty Aluminum Foil?
Aluminum foil is a kitchen staple, but not all foils are created equal. The primary difference between standard and heavy-duty aluminum foil comes down to thickness and durability. Standard foil generally measures around 16 microns thick (0.016 mm), while heavy-duty foil is much thicker — typically 24–30 microns (0.024–0.030 mm) or more. This extra thickness gives heavy-duty foil significantly greater tensile strength and resistance to punctures.
Because of these differences, the two foils serve different purposes. Standard foil is ideal for everyday tasks like wrapping sandwiches, covering bowls, or lining baking trays for light baking. It’s flexible and easy to fold, which makes it versatile for simple kitchen jobs.
In contrast, heavy-duty foil is designed for tougher tasks. Its greater strength makes it ideal for grilling, roasting large cuts of meat, outdoor BBQs, and long-term freezer storage. The thicker gauge reduces the likelihood of tears from sharp bones or rough handling, and it keeps out moisture and air more effectively — which helps prevent freezer burn.
While heavy-duty foil usually costs more per foot, its durability often means you need fewer layers and get more reliable performance under stress.
